Before I start this review, I just want to say that so far, I have gotten as far as the beginning of chamber 5. I feel like I need to mention this as my opinions may change as I become better at this game. This game has many upsides. It is very creative, with many clever weapons and puns (so many puns). It has very strong gameplay, and interesting enemy and boss designs. Despite all this, I have a problem with this game that holds it back. The difficulty. I am no stranger to difficult games. I have beaten many difficult games. The Soulsborne series, for example. The appeal of these games is that they're challenging, but fair. Once you learn everyone's moves, it's not as bad as you first thought, until you get to Ornstein and Smough. With Gungeon, it can be far more brutal than these games. Sometimes, the game can teeter precariously on the line between difficult but fair, and utterly devastating. Not helping is how much RNG there is in this game. Being a Rougelike, you'd expect RNG in this game, but the's much more than you'd expect. There are over 400 items you can acquire. Some are incredibly overpowered, while others are utter garbage. Items are the difference between a poor and great run, and the varying quality does not help. Despite this, I have found myself coming back time and time again, before deleting it when I die, and repeating this cycle. Despite what I have said, this game is very fun and definitely one of the best of 2016. Overall, I really enjoy this game. 8/10.
