Last time I wrote a blog post of what I learned over the summer, I finished it off by saying I had decided to do pixel art, since it provi*ded the best art I could produce. Since then, I have produced more art that I am proud of. The book and the candle holder aren't what I want to talk about, though. They were mostly made from references I used and my memory of what they looked like. The Snake Launcher is the most interesting I made out of all of them. I started with the snake, and created the vat around the snake. Then I added the hose, the gun-parts, and finally, the stock. The snake was originally supposed to be larger, but I was never able to make it look good, so I just kept it short. After that, I made the vat. I had the idea to add snake eggs at the bottom of the vat after I finished it. After that, I made the hose. It wasn't always supposed to be a hose, it used to just be a tube, but I changed it to a hose after I started the gun part of the launcher. The gun used to be a futuristic looking rifle, but I didn't like it. It looked too boring while attached to the snake vat, so I scrapped it. I was in the middle of redesigning the gun when I thought that it looked like a flare gun instead of a rifle, and I instantly realized that I should make the launcher look like it was homemade. I turned the tube into a hose, and added some tape to it to sell the vibe that it was put together in a shed.
After I had finished the flare gun part, I wondered what I could use as the launching mechanism. I decided on a grenade launcher while I was playing Demoman in TF2. I took the front part of the grenade launcher, and combined it with the flare gun, and added the tape to throw in some cohesion for how they fit together. Finally, I added the stock. I was originally just going to use a stock from a sniper rifle, but I had a better idea. I used a wooden board instead, but I made it too long, so I 'sawed' it in half. Then I moved the tape from the rubber hose down to connect it with the board. Overall, I really like the Snake Launcher. The snake itself looks fine, and I wish i had added more detail to the gun, but I'm satisfied with the overall result. I plan to remake it once I have acquired more skill in pixel art, but I really like how it came out.
